Cupping is a therapeutic form of holistic healing that dates back to ancient ages. Cupping therapy involves the use of plastic, silicone, or glass cups to create suction on the skin. Benefits of cupping therapy include decreased muscle tension, improved range of motion, improved circulation, decreased pain, release of adhesions or “knots”, and improved scar tissue. Cupping therapy is very popular among athletes and anyone looking for relief from chronic pain, headaches, muscle tension, or poor mobility.
Cupping therapy also often results in dark circular marks or bruises left on the body which can last for as long as a couple weeks. It is important to stay as hydrated as possible after receiving cupping therapy as side effects may include light headedness or flu-like symptoms post-treatment. It is advised that you speak to your healthcare provider prior to receiving cupping therapy if you have pre-existing medical conditions.

At High Peaks Massage Therapy, all of your massages will be tailored to your exact needs. A brief intake will take place at the beginning of every appointment during which your therapist will inquire about existing health conditions, injuries, surgeries, etc. as well as what brought you in for a massage that day. This will help your therapist develop a treatment plan specifically for you and your body’s unique needs. Whether you need a relaxing Swedish massage or corrective deep tissue work, your massages will always be customized to your preferences and needs.
To ensure that you receive your full allotted time on the table, it is advised that you arrive to your appointments 5-10 minutes early so that a thorough pre-treatment intake can be done.

Deep tissue massages are perfect for releasing muscle adhesions, decreasing specific tension, breaking up scar tissue, and relieving chronic pain caused by tight muscles. Deep tissue massages are typically less relaxing than a Swedish massage and can result in moderate discomfort and soreness during and after the treatment. Many clients describe deep tissue massages as a “good pain” and “hurting so good”.
It is very normal to feel sore for 1-2 days post treatment. Hydration is extremely important after receiving deep tissue work and the use of heat or ice can help ease soreness.

Drink lots of water! Hydration is especially important after any massage treatment. Use of heat or ice therapy may also be advised by your massage therapist depending on what kind of work was done during your treatment. Regular stretching, exercise, and at home self-care can also be of great benefit to your body and may aid in longer lasting relief.
At home self-care can include epsom salt baths, stretching, use of ice packs or heating pads, and use of at-home massage tools such as massage guns, theracanes, and foam rollers.

For regular maintenance and overall self-care, it is advised that you receive massage therapy once per month.
If you are dealing with more chronic issues and have specific pain that you need relief from, it is advised that you receive massage therapy every other week or once per week, depending on the treatment plan your massage therapist develops with you.
When in doubt, it is always a great idea to speak to your health care provider about how massage therapy may benefit you and how regularly you should be receiving treatments, especially if you are pregnant or have any health conditions.
